The Skin: The Mirror of Our Health

Everyone strives for it - a radiant, pure, and young-looking skin. But what is the function of our skin? And how can we prevent the dreaded process of premature aging and impurities?

The function of our skin
Our skin is the most reliable indication of our internal health. It acts as a protective shield against harmful environmental influences, and is also a temperature and moisture regulator for the body. And as we get older, the condition of our skin becomes increasingly important to us - especially during our teen years when we're often plagued with acne, blackheads and blemishes. Later, we worry about the forming of wrinkles!

But before we dive deeper into the subject of great skin care, here are some interesting facts about our skin:

  • The skin is our biggest organ, consisting of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the sub-cutis.
  • The skin is apart of our immune system
  • Our skin has a slightly acidic pH of 5.7

When our skin is functioning optimally, our cell renewal process (our skin's protective function) is still intact. But what happens when this process is disrupted?

It's true that our skin is not just a function of beauty, and that we are exposed to many negative environmental factors such as free radicals and UV rays that can seriously damage our skin permanently. Additionally, smoking, stress, and an unhealthy diet is like poison for our skin, resulting in wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and an increased risk of cancer.

Skin Food: how can we nourish our skin through nutrition

Through a healthy diet, we can nourish our skin from within and support the cells. It is with healthy food that our skin cells gain the necessary building material in order for skin renewal. For that reason, food containing antioxidants are especially important for healthy skin.

Some examples:

Vitamin C: such as citrus fruits, blueberries, peppers, spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, and kale.
Vitamin E: such as wheat germ oil, avocado, almonds, kale, sunflower seeds, blueberries, hazelnuts, spinach, broccoli, and kiwi.
Coenzyme Q10: such as fatty fish, spinach, broccoli, and wheat germ.
Tumeric: this spice has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, thus supports the natural skin flora, protecting us from harmful microbes, fungi, and bacteria.
Zinc: such as oatmeal, pumpkin, seeds, and lentils.
Silicon: such as potatoes, spinach, and cucumbers.
Selenium: such as coconuts, sesame, legumes, sunflowers seeds.

The important function of water for the skin
In addition to a healthy diet, our skin needs a lot of water - at least two liters per day. This is because water eliminates harmful substances, helps to ensure a smooth flow of metabolic processes, cleanses the body from the inside out, and provides us with natural minerals that are important for cell renewal.

Sun exposure and the skin
The sun has a wonderful effect on our mood by releasing endorphins (the happy hormone), and thus is important for our overall health. Too much sun however, can be harmful for the skin. UV-A rays penetrate deeply into the dermis, which then promotes skin aging.

In contrast, UV-B rays only have the ability to reach the epidermis - which then contributes to sunburn. The development of skin cancer is usually from UV-B rays. For this reason, it's important to monitor the amount of time that you're spending in the sun, and protecting yourself adequately with a hat, light clothing, and sunscreen.

Detoxing and the skin

Regular detoxification helps the body to get rid of waste. And while this process takes place on the inside, it is also shown on the outside - on the skin. The short term effects of detoxing may be an increase of sebum, oily skin, and pimples - but this is not a bad thing. In fact, it is simply the toxins being released. Soon, you will be rewarded with pure, fresh, and radiant skin. And one such product that can assist you in the detox process, is our Clear Skin Detox herbal drops.

Why should you choose natural herbal drops as opposed to conventional skin care products?
The creams and solutions that you often find at your local supermarket may appear to improve your skin, but the truth is that these products often pollute the skin with the various chemicals that they contain. They also disrupt the skin's natural pH.

High-quality natural products on the other hand, have a more sustainable effect and care for the skin in a gentler way without disturbing its protective barrier. The Clear Skin Detox Roller has the ability to reduce redness and irritation, and has a sooting and disinfecting effect - especially on acne, pimples, and blackheads.

Additionally, our line of Clear Skin Detox herbal drops and roller are especially suitable for teens facing problem skin.
